Marriott Seeks New Value and Revenue Through Bar Makeovers

A recent Washington Post article describes Marriott’s decision to makeover its bars in response to demands on hotel companies to find new ways to increase value and generate more revenue. The lobby and bar transformation is scheduled to be rolled out to 35 properties within the next year or so.

Named “A.M. Comfort, P.M. Cool”, the lobby will offer a place for guests to eat breakfast in the morning, do business in the afternoon, and relax to a martini at night.

According to J.W. Marriott Jr., “We have a generation traveling today that wants to get out of their guest room and be in the lobby. Maybe they are down there to have a drink. Maybe they are down there to be on the computer. Or to network. I hate to say this, but noise is a big factor. The noisier places are, the more business they seem to do. I don’t get it but it’s true.”

Marriott recognizes the shift in how hotel guests are seeing and experiencing hotels, both for work and play. Guests desire spaces where they can meet, relax, be entertained, conduct business, dine, and find out whats happening in the area. A digital signage network can capitalize on this and help the hotel send targeted and compelling messages to its guests located in the lobby. The ability to promote things such as food and beverage and local events on LCD or plasma displays will build value for a hotel’s guests and help drive the bottom line.
