A recent USA TODAY article discusses the evolution of consumer lifestyles and how that is impacting the way hotels are treating and designing their bars. Hotel chains are repurposing their bars from dull, traditional night-time hangouts to all-day, multi-functional environments to please younger guests and drive the bottom line.
Lodging consultant Bjorn Hanson of PricewaterhouseCoopers says, “Compared with baby boomers, the under-40 set tends to spend less time in guest rooms and wants to do things in groups.” Omni’s Stephen Rosenstock states, “In the past, the bar was a place where people went to drink and socialize. Today, it’s also to conduct business and also to be entertained.”
Some of the things hotels are implementing to address these changes in consumers’ lifestyles include fusing the bar seamlessly with meeting space and business centers, the addition of trendy exotic drinks, new food menu items such as sushi, and location specific music to set the right mood and atmosphere.
