Search Service Proposed for .travel Domain Names

Filed under: Hospitality Industry, Hotel — Josh Coffman @ 12:01 pm on Thursday, September 21, 2006

A recent USATODAY article discusses the new search service that is being proposed by the operators of the .travel domain, Tralliance, to help direct people who mistype web urls or attempt to reach non-existant ones.

Users that type in a non-existant .travel name would be presented with a web page inviting them to register and apply for the domain name as long as their organization belongs to a specified travel industry sector. A search box would also be provided. While Tralliance would make money on new registrations and ads, Tralliance President Ron Andruff says, “The service is primarily a benefit for consumers by referring them to more travel resources online rather than simply an error page.”

The .travel domain opened last year for airlines, theme parks, restaurants and other businesses engaged in travel and tourism. There are approximately 20,000 .travel sites compared with 56 million .coms.

The search service was rejected by ICANN’s Security and Stability Advisory Committee, but ICANN makes the final decision and a second recommendation is due in early November.
